Starving , from Latin famelĭcus, is an adjective that refers to someone hungry or very thin (looking, therefore, to go hungry). For example: “In a country as rich as this one there should be no famished children”, "A famished old man approached the king begging for a piece of bread", "We adopted a famished puppy during the trip and now it has become a healthy dog".

Usually, starving is used as a superlative adjective to express the maximum degree of hunger or starvation who suffers a person or a animal . This state is reached when the subject does not have access to an appropriate diet, either due to lack of foods or by the consumption of substances that nullify the appetite.

Throughout the history of literature there have been many characters with all kinds of characteristics that clearly identify them with respect to the rest. In this case, it should be stressed that in the books there have also been some that were characterized by their famished appearance. Among them, Rocinante has stood out, without a doubt, the horse of the famous Don Quixote de la Mancha.

Also in the cinema there have also been characters identified by that quality. This would be the case of Trevor Reznik, played by Christian Bale, of the movie "The Machinist", who is a man who has been suffering from insomnia for a year and that his body has begun to manifest that problem through extreme thinness.

However, more recently, the "Dallas Buyers Club" character who won an Oscar for Matthew McConaughey in 2014 is also notable for his famished appearance: Ron Woodroof, a cowboy who is diagnosed as having AIDS and To avoid dying, he starts taking an illegal drug.

A man You can also be starving on your own when you start a hunger strike . In those cases, the individual refuses to eat as a protest, which can make him a starving person if his complaint is not answered and if he decides to go on strike.

When referring to the maximum degree of starvation, the concept of starving goes beyond physical appearance or thinness. The malnutrition generates all kinds of complications in the organs and in the capacities; therefore, someone starving may have trouble even concentrating or mobilizing.

When the term is used more symbolically, famished can refer to someone very thin or feeling of appetite : “It shows that you are doing a lot of physical activity, you are starving”, “Is there a lot left for dinner? I'm famished".

In addition to all of the above we would have to underline that there is what is known as famine theft. This is a term used to refer to theft that, without any violence, is carried out by a man or a woman with the clear objective of obtaining a series of essential items for himself or for the sustenance of his beings dear ones
