A chromosome is a condensed filament of DNA which occurs in constant numbers in the cells of each plant or animal species. If a cell has a single set of chromosomes, or half the usual amount of chromosomes that diploid cells have, it is qualified as haploid.

The reproductive cells of mammals are haploid. When the female gamete and the male gamete come together in the fertilization , the resulting zygote already has the normal number of chromosomes. Therefore, the zygote is diploid , while sperm and ovules are haploid.

Haploid cell generation can develop in different ways. When a diploid cell, which has two sets of chromosomes, is divided by meiosis , generates haploid cells. The mitosis Haploid cells, on the other hand, cause the chromosomes to double and divide identically into the daughter cells, which will also be haploid.

The haploid condition is called haploidy . This is the state or situation of the cells in whose nucleus there is no double chromosomal endowment. In humans and in other animals, haploidy appears only in sex cells.

The fusion of gametes (that is, of sperm and ovules) allow to restore diploidy , since haploid series of chromosomes (one provided by the father and the other, by the mother) come together and reach the diploid amount that allows the embryo to originate.
